In the Spirit: Contemporary Northwest Native Arts Exhibit Opens June 17

Northwest Native Arts Market & Festival August 7 and 8

TACOMA–June 1– The Washington State History Museum and the Longhouse Education and Cultural Center at The Evergreen State College present the fifth annual In the Spirit: Contemporary Northwest Native Arts Exhibit, and weekend Northwest Native Arts Market & Festival.

In the Spirit: Contemporary Northwest Native Arts Exhibit showcases the work of contemporary Native American artists, all living and working in the Pacific Northwest. A jury comprised of Native American art experts selected the exhibit’s featured pieces. The exhibit will be on display through September 19.

FREE Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony June 17
A free reception and awards ceremony opens the exhibit on June 17. Awards for “Best in Show”, second place, third place, “Honoring the Northwest,” “Honoring the Ancestors,” “Honoring Innovation,” and “Museum's Choice.” Light refreshments will be served, and artists will be giving “artist talks” describing their pieces, inspirations, materials, and answering guests’ questions. Guests will have an opportunity to talk with the artists.

A weekend festival offers guests an opportunity to partake in Native American traditions, and to purchase art and support these local artists. Check out a variety of products from some of the best Pacific Northwest weavers, printmakers, carvers, bead artists and other artisans. The market will feature a variety of talented artisans selling their wares and offering live art demonstrations. Additionally, visitors can experience Native American culture by taking in live performances by local Native dancers, musicians, and storytellers. Click here for a schedule of performances.

About the Washington State History Museum
The Washington State History Museum, flagship of the Washington State Historical Society, is located at 1911 Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma, just off 1-5. The Washington State History Museum presents exhibits, programs and events that bring Washington's history to life. The Washington State Historical Society has been dedicated to collecting, preserving and vividly presenting Washington's rich and varied history since 1891.

HOURS- Tuesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with extended hours and FREE admission every third Thursday from 2-8 p.m.

ADMISSION-
$8 for adults; $7 for seniors, age 60 and above; $6 for students and military* with valid ID; children, age 5 and below, and members are always FREE. Through Sept. 5, active duty military and their immediate family members are FREE as part of Blue Star Museums program.
