History Day Workshop for Teachers: An Introduction to History Day in Washington State

For classroom teachers, librarians and curriculum administrators: Learn about this project-focused, inquiry-based learning program that develops reading, research and analysis skills that meet the Common Core State Language Arts Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies. Includes an overview of the program, analysis of the specific common core skills that History Day projects develop, an overview of the process of putting together successful History Day project, presentation of actual History Day projects by teachers and students, and a review of local/regional research sources for topics related to the theme “Triumph and Tragedy in History." 

Handouts will include a CD containing the History Day Teachers Manual, a guide for meeting Common Core Standards through National History Day, and an overview of primary and secondary source research skills, sample collections of primary sources that can be used in the classroom. Get practical advice from archives and library professionals and learn the basic steps for researching a History Day project. Includes a hands-on exploration of primary and secondary research sources, as well as processes, strategies and rules for accessing and using public libraries, college and university libraries, museum collections, archives, and online research sources. An introduction to History Day will take place at 8:00. Teachers who participate in the 8:00 AM session will be eligible for a total of five clock hours.
