LEWIS AND CLARK: TOOLS FOR PLANNING, PARTNERSHIPS, AND OPPORTUNITIESThe 16th Annual Washington Heritage Conference will be held October 22-24, 2003, in Richland, Washington at the Red Lion Inn. This year's theme is "Lewis and Clark: Tools for Planning, Partnerships, and Opportunities." The overall goal of the conference is to bring together leaders, volunteers, and experts of the heritage community to make contacts, share ideas, and gain expertise. Individuals working on Lewis and Clark projects; leading other commemorative efforts, such as the state's territorial sesquicentennial; or just wanting to learn about techniques and resources that can be applied to any local heritage effort should attend the conference. The conference will consist of keynote speakers plus a variety of sessions and workshops ranging from event planning to tribal involvement. There will also be tours to historic sites and local museums as well as a heritage resource fair. The 16th Annual Washington Heritage Conference is being held in conjunction with a second conference on the history of the Washington Territory, which is co-sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Historians Guild and held October 24-25, 2003, at the Columbia Basin College. Special Washington Heritage Conference room rates are available at the Red Lion Inn in Richland. Rates vary from $64.00 for a single room to $69.00 for a double room. To make reservations, call 509-946-78611 and mention that you are with the Heritage Conference. Reservations need to be made by September 21, 2003. After that date, reservations will be made on a space available basis. Following Lin's guided tour, she participated in a planning session with state park officials. Lin will continue to provide input to the master planning process for the park as she develops renderings of her interpretive work. Daniel Farber, parks planner for Washington State Parks said, "Lin was intrigued by the isthmus between the Columbia and the Pacific as well as by the possibility of restoring forests and estuaries." Lin was also in the Northwest in fall 2002. During her brief stay, she visited Sacajawea State Park in Pasco, Washington and was hosted by Umatilla tribal members at the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute in Pendleton, Oregon. Lin also visited Frenchman's Bar Park in Vancouver, Washington and met with the Confluence Project team. To learn more about the Confluence Project, go to www.ConfluenceProject.org. WRITERS SOUGHT FOR JR CORPS OF DISCOVERY KIT AND FAMILY EXPLORER GUIDEASTORIA, OR - The Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Association (LCBA) is seeking writers to help develop text for a Jr. Corps of Discovery journal kit and Family Explorer Guide. These projects are being created to help promote Destination 2005: The Pacific signature event activities commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Corps of Discovery. Interested writers should contact Cyndi Mudge by May 30 at lcba@LewisandClarkCoast.com or by calling (503) 861-4403 for details. Both projects are based on a teacher lesson plan developed by the LCBA Education Committee for the Jr. Corps of Discovery day-camp that took place in Seaside during the summer of 2002. The goal of this project is to rewrite the lesson plan as an activity and journal kit for 4th to 6th grade students and as a family vacation planning guide. The journal kit is being provided to fourth grade students residing in Clatsop County during in-class visits from LCBA that begin this fall. Teachers or home-schoolers who are interested in learning more about having LCBA volunteers visit their class to talk about bicentennial activities are encouraged to email at lcba@lewisandclarkcoast.com or call (503) 861-4403. Plans are underway to expand this program to Pacific County in Washington.
