Lewis and Clark Painting Series Unveiled

Artist Michael Haynes with Dave Nicandri, WSHS Director

On Tuesday, May 27, 2003, the Washington State History Museum hosted the official unveiling of the Lewis and Clark series by artist Michael Haynes. This group of five paintings was commissioned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and depicts scenes from the journey of Lewis and Clark that exemplify the Corps of Discovery as a military enterprise. This was the first time that all five works will be shown together and artist Michael Haynes was present for this one-night only viewing opportunity.

Artist Michael Haynes works from a small farm in Wildwood, Missouri. A lifelong interest in history has inspired Michael's passion for accurately recreating details from the past in historically oriented paintings. In honor of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial, Michael has been involved with numerous painting commissions depicting the Corps of Discovery and their epic trek across America. Michael has also collaborated with noted author and historian Bob Moore on Tailor Made, Trail Worn, a book that depicts the uniforms and clothing of the Lewis and Clark expedition as well as what Army life was like at the time. This collaboration has been hailed as the definitive work on this subject and features a great deal of previously undocumented information. Copies of Tailor Made, Trail Worn are available in the Pendleton Store at the Washington State History Museum.

The News Tribune incorrectly reported that the Lewis & Clark painting series would be displayed at the Washington State History Museum in the future. While the museum does not plan on displaying the Haynes series, it will feature Beyond Lewis and Clark: The Army Explores the West, a major national exhibit filled with objects and engaging stories, beginning February 14, 2004. The exhibit will run through October 2004. For more information on this exhibition, please visit our website at http://www.washingtonhistory.org/lewisandclark/lc-exhibits.htm.
