Opportunity for Writers and Illustrators

The Washington State Historical Society is proud to announce a new online children's magazine called ColumbiaKids, due to launch in August 2008. Thanks to a grant from the Verizon Foundation, this new e-publication will bring a whole new twist to exploring Pacific Northwest history. Written especially for kids 4 to 14, the magazine will include special features like "One Day in History," "Homework Helper," and "Northwest Hotspot." ColumbiaKids will not only be a great read for children, it will be a fabulous resource for teachers who want to integrate reading, writing, and Pacific Northwest history. Writers and illustrators interested in receiving a submission guidelines should visit the Contract Opportunities page.

Published for members since 1987, the Washington State Historical Society's quarterly journal, COLUMBIA: The Magazine of Northwest History, came into being as an extension of the Society's efforts to promote interest in and educate people about Washington's history. Featuring lavishly illustrated articles by leading writers and scholars in the field on a wide spectrum of historical topics, COLUMBIA: examines the continuing dialogue between past and present as well as the relationship between local or state history and the broad pattern of regional or national events.

Each issue includes commentaries and book reviews, plus historical photographs, maps, drawings, paintings and ephemera, often from the Society's own collections. It is free to members of the Washington State Historical Society, and is also available by subscription. See Membership for more details.
