If you are interested in reaching out to the community and members of the media to inform, promote and excite people about the rich history of the State of Washington, then the Washington State Historical Society is looking for you.

Location

This position is located in the Member, Donor and Public Relations Department of the Washington State Historical Society in Tacoma, Washington. This is a full-time permanent position working Monday-Friday, totaling 40 hours a week. Scheduling flexibility is required on occasion for evening and weekend events.

Duties

This position works closely with the Development and Marketing Manager to research, develop and execute sponsorship proposals, public relations strategies, marketing and promotional efforts, member events and other special events as assigned at the Washington State History Museum.

The Public Relations Coordinator interacts with all departments in the agency to coordinate efforts and accomplish marketing and funding goals. They also work directly with the general public, media and other institutions to develop relationships that help meet the goals of the organization.

Qualifications

Desirable Qualifications:
A Bachelor degree involving major study in journalism, public relations, graphic design, communications, or a closely allied field; AND, demonstrated experience in communications, design and/or development activities.

Conditions of Employment

  • Successful candidates must have a valid Washington State driver's license.
  • Successful candidates must pass a Criminal Justice Records Check.

Museum Security Officer

Classification: Security Guard 1
Salary: $10.78/hr to $13.55 w/ shift differential

The Washington State Historical Society is seeking to fill non-permanent, part-time security officer positions in the Museum Support Services Department of the Washington State History Museum to work special events and to fill in during the absences of permanent employees.

Description

The Museum Security Officer supports the Society’s mission by providing a safe and secure public environment, acting as an informational liaison to the visiting public and engaging visitors in a friendly and professional manner.

She or he is responsible for ensuring that buildings and grounds are free of hazards, visitors conduct themselves prudently, monitoring building access and egress, security of building and grounds, enforcing parking rules and conduct, issuing parking violations, reporting discrepancies in writing and verbally and conducting oneself in a professional manner at all times.

Essential functions:

  • Responsible for maintaining a daily log of shift duties and occurrences.
  • Reporting discrepancies of standard operating procedures.
  • Monitoring access and egress to the building and grounds.
  • Read, write and speak the English language.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Use effectively; 2-way radio, cellular telephone, computer and other office equipment.
  • Walk or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Able to lift 50lbs.
  • Obtain 1st aid/CPR & AED certification and effectively demonstrate ability.

Requirements:

  • At least one year of previous security or law enforcement experience within the last 5 years
  • Complete a Washington State Patrol Request for Criminal History Information
  • Lift 50 pounds
  • Excellent public speaking and written communication
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Computer competencies include familiarity with Microsoft Windows XP and Office applications, such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and Access.
