JONES, Frederick L., survey book. 1 v.

Abstract: Frederick L. Jones was a surveyor employed in McCloud’s Party No. 3, working west from North Yakima, Washington Territory up the Ahtanum and Cowiche creek drainages in the spring of 1886.

Biography: Frederick Lewis Jones worked in McCloud’s Party No. 3 (possibly for the Northern Pacific Railroad?) surveying west out of North Yakima up the Ahtanum and Cowiche creek drainages into the Cascade Mountains. There are no notes that would indicate that it was a location survey, but rather, a reconnaissance to determine the agricultural potential of the land held by the NP..

Scope and content: The diary begins in Sprague, W.T. on 31 May 1886 as Jones departs for North Yakima to participate in the survey. He describes the trip, improvements on the land he is surveying, and drawings of each section with a detailed description of the land, cover, names of land owners, and township and section numbers.

No biographical material on Jones was located, but his veteran’s pension claim number is included: 387.275.
