Monday Civic Club, records, 2 1.f, 1910-1980

Abstract:  The Monday Civic Club of Tacoma was established in 1910 by women active in various charitable organizations who saw the need for a club devoted entirely to civic matters.

Background:  The Monday Civic Club of Tacoma was established in 1910 by a group of women active in charitable organizations who saw the need for a club devoted entirely to civic matters.  The goal was to focus attention and funds on organizations and causes not being helped by other clubs.  Club activities centered on distributing baskets of clothing and food to families in need, fund raising activities such as card parties and rummage sales, and the making of sweaters and socks for the Red Cross.  As the Monday Civic Club matured, members focused on conservation programs and campaigns against air and water pollution. It sponsored school essay and poster contests about conservation problems.  The Monday Civic Club continued to promote and raise money for various charitable groups and was the first organization to raise funds for the Sea Otter pool at the Pt. Defiance Park Zoo in Tacoma.  The Monday Civic Club was affiliated with both Washington State and National Federations of Women’s Clubs and also belonged to the Tacoma and Pierce County President’s Council of Women’s Organizations.
