CARSTEN’S PACKING COMPANY, records. 4 v.

 

Abstract: The Carstens Packing Company was founded in Tacoma, WA in 1904 for the purpose of “slaughtering…animals and packing of meats and the manufacture of all kinds of slaughter house products.”

 

History: Thomas Carstens (1865-19?), a German immigrant, worked in the meat industry after his arrival in the United States in 1881. He came to Seattle, WA in 1889 and established a meat market. In 1903 Carstens moved to Tacoma, and in 1904 he incorporated the Carstens Packing Company to engage in, “the slaughtering of animals and packing of meats and the manufacture of all kinds of slaughter house products.”

 

The company did a multimillion dollar business and in 1914 he expanded his scope with the purchase of the Empire Packing Company of Spokane

 

Scope and content: The minutes books are fairly complete from 1904-1927. They include laws, bylaws, and the minutes of all meetings of the board of directors, which are largely routine corporate business.
