Small plate, Northern Northwest Coast culture / Haida, ca. 1890-1920. Handmade and carved of argillite. Plate is round with raised sides, round flat base, and flat rim edge. Underside has an incised line 5/8" from rim edge and an incised line around base edge. Interior has an incised decoration of a whale with large head, triangular teeth, and curved tail that extends up under head. Flippers are cross hatched. Spine of body consists of series of circles connected with curved lines. Inner rim edge is decorated with short incised bands under rim and extending to incised line below (app. 3/4").
