Two page letter from Jacob Lawrence to Kenneth Hopkins. Dated July 31, 1972. The letter is typed with added notes in pencil and black ink. Lawrence describes his plan for artwork that the State Capital Museum was commissioning from him. The subject of the work was to be the journey of the George Washington Bush party from St. Louis to Olympia, WA over the Oregon Trail. Note that the completed artwork is not exacty the same as the plan that Lawrence describes in this letter.
Recent research suggests that George Bush did not have the middle name "Washington." At the time these paintings were created, that research had not yet emerged. The original title of the works, "the George Washington Bush Series," remains on the collections record.
