    Round basket (a) with lid (b). The center of the base is plaited cedar bark with twined cedar bark around it and a row of three-strand twining at the edge. The sides are wrapped twining with bear grass outer wefts and cedar bark inner wefts. There is an upright strip of cedar bark at the rim to hold the lid. The lid is unusual because the wrapped twining is reversed. The design has three bands of blue and purple near the base and similar bands on the lid in the center, at the shoulder, and at the rim.     Basket made by Hazel Pete, Chehalis, southern Northwest Coast cultural group, 1950s-2000?. Handmade and woven in coiled technique of cattail and raffia. The basket has a parallel coil start making a large flat oval. One section near edge is red, possibly a maker's mark. Sides bulge out slightly and have bifucated stitches in raffia over cattail foundation. Overall design is a large format stepped design creating large stepped trianglular forms in purple and yellow dyed raffia.
