    Seattle Post Intelligencer Silver Skis Trophy awarded to Paul R. Gilbreath, 1940. Trophy designed by Carl A. Zapffe. Large trophy mounted on round wood stand. Stand is painted black. Trophy made of metal, silver plated. Trophy consists of central column with round etched design. On top is a laurel wreath. Attached to either side is a pair of downhill skis with "bear trap" bindings that have moveable parts. On the lower section is a wide metal band decorated with pierced vertical bands with leaf design. Between two bands is engraved name of trophy and winner of the trophy. At top and bottom of band are black painted wood sections. Lowest section extends out from band. Base covered with green felt. Engraved on one side of band above base: Seattle Post-Intelligencer / Silver Skis Trophy / Mt Rainier / Paul R. Gilbreath/1940 The Silver Skis race extended from Camp Muir on Mt. Rainier at 10,000 feet down to Paradise at 5,400 feet. During the 1940 race, a skier died on the course. Gilbreath won the race in five minutes, 24 seconds.
