The records are divided into several series; awards, biography, clinics, coaching information, correspondence, College Swimming Coaches Association of America, high school championships, photographs, publications, retirement, scrapbooks, theses, and yearbooks. Scrapbooks, publications, and coaching information files constitute the majority of the collection. Scrapbooks contain chiefly newspaper and magazine articles. Further, they cover schedules, correspondence, photographs, notes, programs, meet results, telegrams, pamphlets, newsletters, memoranda, tickets, awards, postcards, and team member list. Scrapbooks are arranged by date, size and function. The coaching information files also encompass similar types of documents. However, they also include bulletins, mailing lists, radio and press booklets, and rules. Finally, the publications files are comprised of articles, magazines, and books. While many of the magazines included articles written by Torney, all of the books incorporated in this collection were authored by him. This collection details the growth of swimming as a competitive sport at the University of Washington.
