    photographic copy of a pencil sketch, by Alfred Downing, titled "Red River to Pine Ridge ," dated November 27, 1873. A large group of men travel through the snow on the way to Pine Ridge and Lake of the Woods. A horse pulled sleigh and a dog lead the group, followed by several men riding horses and several men walking on foot. Two covered supply wagons pulled by large teams of mules form the rear of the group. Located on page 2 of sketchbook and one of a series of approximately 145 drawings (pencil and water color) in a bound sketchbook by Alfred Downing. The illustration documents the U. S. Northern Boundary Survey Expedition of 1873-1874. The Lake of the Woods is a large area on the Canada (Manitoba/Ontario) Minnesota border.
