[apple head doll]
Creation Date: ca. 1918Catalog ID: C1971.37.1Maple apple head doll, probably made by Mary D. McAboy of Missoula, MT, ca. 1918. Doll is dressed in Plains Indian style. It has a small wrinkled black head made of an apple. The front is lacquered. Black thread hair is glued to top and is bound into two braids that are wrapped in blue, green, and pink thread. The large body has a jacket with lapels and fringes on sleeves and down front. The arms are crossed at front. Along edge of fringe is a zigzag design. Lower part of jacket has beaded star design on either side. Beaded on center of star is a figure of a horse and figure in white beads. A feathered headdress is painted behind figure. The figure has a breech cloth that is decorated in beads and painted triangle designs on front. The zigzag design is repeated down sides of pants next to fringe. There is a floral like design on the toes of the moccasins in red orange, green, bronze and clear beads. There is a rod protruding from the proper left leg, that when turned, moves the head from side to side. -
