    [Quinault canoe paddle]

    Quinault canoe paddle, 1870-1900. Handcarved from yew wood and unpainted. The transverse grip was carved as a separate piece. The shaft is flattened. The junction of the blade and shaft is a smooth curve, and the blade is leaf-shaped, widening slightly, then narrowing to the tip in a smooth curve. The shaft is slightly bowed.

    Puget Sound style (Tulalip) man's canoe paddle, southern Northwest Coast culture area / Puget Sound Salish / Tulalip, 1870-1900. Handcarved of maple. The blade, transverse grip and upper portion of the shaft have been painted dark red. The transverse grip does not appear to be a separate piece. The shaft is rounded. The blade has a sharp shoulder at the shaft, and the blade has a distinct bulge in the middle, and a smaller bulge just above the tip.

    [Northern Northwest Coast culture canoe paddle]

    Carved wooden canoe paddle, northern Northwest Coast culture area, Haida (?), 1880-1920. Handmade and carved and with painted formline designs in red and black. Grip extends across either side of shaft and is oval shaped in cross section. Notches are on either side of throat. The top of the shaft below the notches is flat and somewhat triangular in shape; it expands into a shaft is that oval to to more round in cross section. The top of the blade has notches on either side of the shaft. Slight raised area through most of blade center. Tip of blade is tapered to point. U shaped formline designs visible on both sides of blade.
